About Alan Mattioni

Alan made his first flight in a Cessna 152 shortly after graduating from Temple Law School, and went on to obtain a Commercial Pilot Certificate with Multi-engine and Instrument Ratings.  Needless to say, Alan was thrilled when he was offered a position at The Wolk Law Firm and had the chance to work with Arthur Wolk on such notable cases as Buschmann v. Little Rock National Airport involving the crash of American Airlines Flight 1420 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

One of Alan’s proudest achievements is the recovery he obtained against Mitsubishi Aircraft in connection with the crash of an MU-2 airplane in South Carolina following a failure of the flap system – primarily because the entire wreckage had been disposed right after the NTSB completed its “investigation” and before anyone but Mitsubishi had a chance to examine it.  The NTSB (and Mitsubishi) not surprisingly blamed the accident on faulty maintenance, but The Wolk Law Firm acquired an entire flap drive system and constructed a working mock-up to show that defective instructions actually caused an asymmetric deployment of the flaps that was completely uncontrollable by the pilot.  It was during this time that Alan learned the importance of having the best legal representation possible, and spending whatever is necessary to prove the case when taking on the aviation insurance companies and their insureds.

In 2008, Alan took a position as a Trial Attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice in the Aviation, Space and Admiralty Section.  At the Department of Justice, Alan put his skills to work immediately, as his first assignment was the ongoing litigation involving the crash of Comair 5191 at the Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky, a CRJ-200 Regional Jet that ran off the end of the runway, killing 49 people.  Just days after being hired, Alan flew to Lexington, Kentucky and practically lived there for the next several months, until all claims against the United States had finally been resolved.  In recognition of his efforts, he received a Special Commendation for Outstanding Service.  Working on the defense side was both new, and challenging, but Alan’s “plaintiff’s perspective” would serve him well over the next several years while handling all types of cases against the Federal Aviation Administration and other government agencies, receiving yet another Special Commendation for Outstanding Service in 2015.

In 2018, Alan was promoted to Senior Aviation Counsel and continued to work on some of the most high-profile aviation cases brought against the federal government, including a lawsuit arising from the helicopter crash that killed legendary basketball star Kobe Bryant, and eight others.  In the interest of aviation safety, Alan volunteered to lecture air traffic controllers on the importance of complying with ATC procedures, and was often consulted on important issues of the day like federal preemption, space legislation, and Unmanned Aerial Systems (drones).  After three years in this position, Alan felt it was time to return to private practice, and specifically, The Wolk Law Firm.  Alan is ecstatic to be back at The Wolk Law Firm working for plaintiffs who have been injured in aviation crashes.

Some of Alan’s notable cases are:

Kula v. United States, No. 4:17-CV-02122, 2021 WL 1976687 (M.D. Pa. May 18, 2021)
