Arthur Alan Wolk

For more than 40 years, The Wolk Law Firm has concentrated its practice in the area of aviation law, with Arthur personally generating verdicts and settlements of nearly $1 billion during the last decade alone. He is known for obtaining and on appeal, holding, the largest verdicts for each type of air accident claim in recent aviation history.

As a result of his seasoned courtroom skills, aviation industry savvy and technical aircraft knowledge, Arthur has been named to the steering committees of every major airline disaster in which The Wolk Law Firm has represented victims. Such notable cases include: United Airlines 232, Sioux City, Iowa, DC-10; United Airlines 585, Colorado Springs, CO, B-737; USAir 427, Aliquippa, PA., Pittsburgh, B-737; Comair 3272, Monroe, MI, (Detroit), EMB-120; Swissair 111, Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, MD-11; EgyptAir 990, near Nantucket, MA, Boeing 767; and Alaska Air 261, Port Mugu, CA, MD-83.

Arthur’s personal aviation experience is extensive as well. He has been a pilot for more than 30 years and holds the Federal Aviation Administration’s highest pilot’s certificate – Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) – for multi-engine land and sea aircraft, and single-engine land and sea airplanes. He is also one of a handful of pilots holding a Letter of Authorization for the F9F-2 Panther jet fighter. Arthur has thousands of hours of flight experience and has also flown in air shows throughout the country. He was selected for the Flight of the Grumman Cats as Cat 5 in recognition of his flying skill, a position he held for 11 years. The FAA consistently conferred a low level aerobatic and formation air show waiver based on Arthur’s performance as a pilot.

In 1996, the Panther jet he was flying developed engine trouble on a flight from Kalamazoo, Michigan and Arthur crashed off the airport, guiding his crippled aircraft away from populated areas. Now recovered from his injuries, Arthur is uniquely aware of what the flight crew experiences in an airplane crash and the human and mechanical factors that contribute to it. That experience, although tragic, gives him a perspective like no other in air crash litigation.

Arthur’s credo is to push for change in the aviation industry – in the practices of both airlines and airplane manufacturers. He believes that the majority of air crashes occur because of defects or servicing negligence – issues well known to the manufacturers and/or airlines. By negotiating substantial settlements and winning large verdicts, Arthur hopes to make it more economically sound for the parties responsible to correct these known problems, rather than simply pay off the victims’ families in the event that they are sued after yet another crash.

As past editor of Lawyer Pilots Bar Association Journal and past legal editor for Business and Commercial Aviation Magazine, Arthur is regularly quoted and consulted by aviation writers. He is a frequent contributor to The Aviation Consumer, Aviation Safety and other aviation publications, and has appeared as an on-air aviation expert for ABC’s “Nightline,” CBS Evening News, NBC, CNN, the BBC and numerous television and radio stations around the world.

A frequent lecturer on aviation law, Arthur has presented to the National Air Transportation Association, the Practicing Law Institute, the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the Southern Methodist University Aviation Law Symposium, Temple University School of Law, the Pennsylvania Bar Institute and the Aviation Section of the American Bar Association, among others. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Lawyer Pilots Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the Philadelphia Bar Association, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association and Warbirds of America. Rated as one of the top 10 aviation lawyers in the country by his colleagues, Arthur is a fixture in Who’s Who in Aviation Law.

Arthur was honored recently by being assigned the very first televised appellate argument before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, arguing the scope of the General Aviation Revitalization Act as it might apply to aircraft maintenance publications.

Arthur has been honored by the Temple University Beasley School of Law as its 2005 Founder’s Day Award Recipient. He was chosen by the Law School and its Alumnae for special recognition for his achievements as a lawyer and for bringing honor and recognition to the law school. Arthur has also been named to the Law School’s faculty as Adjunct Professor of Law teaching the first course in Aviation Law.

Arthur is an author, editor and lecturer on aviation law and air safety. Articles published by The Aviation Consumer, Aviation Safety and other publications and has appeared on ABC Evening News, CBS Evening News, CNBC, and CNN Larry King Live.
